Signs You Need Professional Drain Cleaning

Most drain problems give you warning signs before they become emergencies.

Watch for:

  • Water draining slowly in sinks, tubs, or showers

  • Gurgling sounds coming from drains after water runs

  • Unpleasant odors rising from drains

  • Water backing up into other fixtures when you flush or run water

  • Recurring clogs that keep coming back after DIY fixes

  • Multiple slow drains throughout the house at the same time

Multiple slow drains happening simultaneously are almost always a sign of a main sewer line problem, not just individual clogs. That requires professional diagnosis, not a bottle of drain cleaner.

Our Drain Cleaning Services

Smart Plumbing Solutions handles the full range of drain issues for residential and commercial customers:

Kitchen Drains

Grease, food particles, and soap buildup are the most common culprits in kitchen drains. We clear blockages completely and can advise on how to prevent them from coming back.

Bathroom Drains

Hair, soap scum, and mineral buildup are the main causes of slow bathroom drains. We clear sinks, showers, and tubs quickly and cleanly.

Floor Drains

Basement and utility room floor drains are often forgotten until they back up. We clear and inspect these drains before they cause water damage.

Main Sewer Line

When multiple drains are slow or backing up at once, the problem is usually in the main sewer line. We inspect, diagnose, and clear sewer line blockages before they escalate.

Commercial Drain Cleaning

High-use commercial drains clog faster and cause more disruption when they fail. We provide fast, professional drain cleaning for restaurants, offices, and commercial properties across the Eastside.

Why Drain Cleaning Is Better Than Drain Chemicals

Store-bought drain cleaners are a short-term fix with long-term costs. The harsh chemicals in these products can corrode pipes over time, especially in older homes, and rarely clear the entire blockage, which means the clog comes back faster.

Professional drain cleaning removes the blockage completely, without damaging your pipes. For recurring drain problems, we can also inspect the line to identify the root cause, whether it's buildup, a damaged pipe, or tree root intrusion.

Drain Cleaning | Questions Homeowners Ask

  • The most effective way to clean a drain is professional hydro-jetting or mechanical snaking, depending on the severity of the blockage. These methods remove the entire clog, not just punch a hole through it. For light maintenance, flushing drains weekly with hot water helps prevent buildup. Avoid chemical drain cleaners, they rarely clear the full blockage and can damage pipes over time.

  • They can help with minor odors and very light buildup, but they won't clear an actual clog. The chemical reaction between baking soda and vinegar produces mostly water and CO2, not enough force to break up grease, hair, or soap buildup deep in the pipe. For a real blockage, you need mechanical cleaning.

  • No. Chemical drain cleaners are particularly damaging to galvanized pipes. The harsh chemicals accelerate corrosion and can weaken joints over time. If you have older galvanized plumbing, call a professional rather than using store-bought drain cleaners.

  • Hydro jetting requires professional-grade equipment operating at very high pressure, typically 1,500 to 4,000 PSI. DIY hydro jetting machines are significantly less powerful and can actually push debris further into the line. It also requires knowing where and how to access the line safely. This is a job for a licensed plumber.

  • Because chemical drain cleaners corrode pipes over time, especially older galvanized or PVC pipes. They also rarely remove the full blockage; they just burn a hole through it, which means the clog rebuilds faster. Professional cleaning removes the entire obstruction.

  • Grease, cooking oil, coffee grounds, eggshells, paper towels, "flushable" wipes, and hair are the most common culprits. None of them breaks down properly in pipes, and all contribute to buildup and blockages over time.

  • Dawn dish soap can help break up grease buildup in kitchen drains when used with hot water, but it won't clear an actual clog. It's a maintenance trick, not a fix. If your drain is slow or fully blocked, soap won't solve it.

  • Depending on the blockage, we use drain snakes (augers) for most clogs, and hydro-jetting for severe or recurring blockages. Hydro-jetting uses high-pressure water to completely clear the pipe, it's the most thorough method available.
